Senators voted last night to pass a Bill which seeks to restore and add to protections for marine wildlife in Canada.
Bill C-68 reverses changes made to the federal Fisheries Act in 2012, and adds in some additional protections to modernize the Act.
Protections for fish habitats were removed from the Act as part of those 2012 amendments.
New amendments will also place more of an emphasis on conservation to reflect a shift in Canadian values.
With the new changes, Indigenous knowledge will be recognized as a legal requirement of fishery projects moving forward.
In addition, the new legislation also bans the trading of shark fin products.
