A Calgary-based company has plans to build a $5.6 billion petrochemical plant in Prince George.
West Coast Olefins says it has secured a 300 acre site in the BCR Industrial site for the project which would create up to 1000 permanent jobs as well as several thousand workers during the three-year construction phase.
The company says the project would produce polyethylene, the most commonly used plastic in the world, with the majority of it shipped to Asia.
WCO says representatives have been researching Prince George, and meeting local contractors to ensure that the company maximizes its use of local labour and associated construction and fabrication infrastructure. Officials have also had several meetings with First Nations, local leaders, and construction companies over the past six months.
Prince George Mayor Lyn Hall says the project promises great economic potential for the city and the province.
If approved, WCO plans to have the plant up and running by 2023.
