The Department of Fisheries and Oceans has announced a blanket closure of salmon fishing on the Skeena River Watershed.
A notice from DFO says Skeena Sockeye returns continue to be below the conservation level of 400,000 needed under the Northern BC Salmon Integrated Management Plan.
Officials say they have had extensive consultations with First Nations and stakeholders about measures needed to address Sockeye conservation.
The fishing closure in the Skeena River Watershed (Region 6) takes place Saturday July 27, 2019.
DFO has also reduced daily limits for Chinook in Areas 3, 4, and 5 of the North Coast to one fish per day starting Saturday.
