A new study released by the Prince Rupert Port Authority shows jobs associated with the facility have grown by a thousand since 2016.
The economic impact study looked at a variety of factors based on the nearly 28 million tonnes of cargo shipped through the port in 2018 and found that employment has grown from 5200 jobs to 6200.
About 3600 full-time positions were in marine, terminal, rail, and truck logistics to move goods through the region, while indirect work accounted for another 2600 jobs.
Compared to the last study in 2016, the port says economic indicators have shown a significant upward trend, reflecting the 40% increase in port volumes during that time.
“The Port of Prince Rupert’s success is built on the hard work of the women and men that contribute to moving cargo efficiently and safely through the gateway every day, building our global reputation for innovation and reliability,” said Shaun Stevenson, President and CEO of the Prince Rupert Port Authority.
The Port of Prince Rupert is currently Canada’s third largest port by value of trade and is expanding container and bulk terminals.
