RCMP and Terrace Search and Rescue have suspended the search for a missing kayaker in the Nass River.
Search efforts started Wednesday after a helicopter crew spotted an empty kayak and a backpack floating in the river southeast of the Bell Irving Bridge.
A swift water rescue team from Terrace did an aerial search of the remote, rugged area Wednesday night, but failed to turn up anything.
Efforts continued Thursday with the help of an RCMP aircraft. Crews eventually recovered a backpack below the Old Nass River bridge on Highway 37 and a red, inflatable kayak, but no sign of a person.
We have not received a missing persons call or distress call from this area,
said Stewart RCMP Acting Detachment Commander Rob Gardner, however if anyone saw someone launching a kayak around the Bell Irving Bridge, or has dash cam footage from this area yesterday, August 28th, 2019, please contact us.
Gardner says the kayaker may have notified someone of their plans or had been seen traveling to this area with a white GMC crew cab pick up and kayak.
