Do you know if your home plumbing contains lead?
The City of Prince Rupert is reminding residents to run their taps for one or two minutes until the water runs cold.
The notice comes after water quality testing in over 60 homes revealed that about ten houses had elevated levels of lead due to leaching from residential plumbing systems
The samples were taken in the morning after water was left to sit in pipes overnight
The City says the prevalence of lead in plumbing solder prior to 1989 combined with the age of Prince Rupert’s housing, mean that it’s possible many home may have some lead exposure through plumbing.
Officials have notified the affected homeowners, but says it would like to reiterate the importance of flushing, filtering water, and/or replacing plumbing containing lead to avoid possible exposure.
Lead levels within Prince Rupert’s community water system are well below Federal and Provincial standards.
