Prince Rupert Mayor Lee Brain says he believes a solution can be found to keep Alaska ferries coming to the city.
The Alaska government announced earlier this week that the Alaska Marine Highway System (AMHS) would end ending service to Prince Rupert by October 1.
In a statement issued Thursday, Brain says he plans to travel to Juneau later this month to meet with officials in Alaska’s Department of Transportation and the Governor’s office.
He says the situation is complex with a number of issues, including Alaska’s budget challenges, necessary structural upgrades to the Alaska ferry dock in Prince Rupert, and new requirements from the U.S. Customs and Border Agency, which now mandates armed guards be present.
Brain says he doesn’t believe this is the end of the ferry service to Prince Rupert and now is the time to find a long-term solution to the issue.
