Coast Mountain College student housing is in for a change.
Thursday, the provincial government announced it will be investing $18.7 million to construct newer student housing. The college serves 34 different communities including 21 indigenous communities and is in need of new student housing to accomodate.
The project will consist of 33 brand new beds, 71 beds being replaced and four entirely new suites for Elders or relatives to stay in, for a total of 108 beds.
There will be two new three-storey 54 bed buildings replacing four old buildings. These new buildings will also be more energy effecient.
The rental rates for the new buildings will be $550 for quad occupancy and $650 for triple occupancy. The construction is expected to generate 50 direct jobs and 48 indirect jobs.
Construction is expected to start in summer 2020, with completion in fall 2021.
