Nathan Cullen says he plans to work with Prince Rupert and the Federal Government to help maintain the Alaskan Ferry Service.
Cullen has expressed hope of avoiding the closure of the Alaskan Marine Highway after a decision from the U.S. customs and Border Agency threatened to end the ferry service.
“This service is vital to the community in Prince Rupert. I’ve heard from city officials, small
business owners and in particular the tourism industry just how important it is that we keep a
regular service out of Prince Rupert to Alaska,” said Cullen in a media release.
The State of Alaska announced that the ferry service would end October 1, citing new requirements from the U.S. Customs and Border Agency that have not been met.
Prince Rupert Mayor Lee Brain is heading to Juneau next week to meet with officials in Alaska’s Department of Transportation and the Governor’s office.
