Prince Rupert Mayor Lee Brain is in Alaska this week as part of a bid to maintain ferry services from the state to the North Coast.
Brain had meetings scheduled with the Governor’s office and Alaska’s Department of Transportation this week.
The Alaska government announced earlier this month that the Alaska Marine Highway System (AMHS) would end ending service to Prince Rupert by October 1.
Brain has said the situation is complex given Alaska’s budget challenges, necessary structural upgrades to the Alaska ferry dock in Prince Rupert, and new requirements from the U.S. Customs and Border Agency.
But he says he doesn’t believe this is the end of the ferry service to Prince Rupert and now is the time for a long-term solution to the issue.
Brain will also be attending the Southeast Alaska Conference in Sitka.
The mayor is expected to provide an update on his meetings sometime later this week.
