With winter just around the corner the Government of B.C. is reminding drivers it’s time to put on winter tires.
Effective October 1st drivers travelling on most provincial highways are required to have winter tires that are in good condition on their vehicles.
In B.C., regulations state that an appropriate winter tire is defined as one with either the M+S or a mountain and snowflake symbol and in good condition with a minimum tread depth of 3.5 millimetres.
Winter tires are not mandatory everywhere in the province but they are required on a majority of B.C. highways. Drivers that fail to comply with the regulation can receive a fine of $109.
Winter tire regulations end on March 31st on many highways. Regulations have been extended to April 30th on select mountain passes and rural highways to account for early spring snowfall.
