At the request of CN rail, the Hazelton RCMP came to assist CN police services after at least two dozen protesters blockaded the CN rail tracks west of New Hazelton.
The RCMP arrested a total of 14 individuals who refused to leave the property. They were transported to New Hazelton RCMP Detachment for processing and released shortly after 3 am with an upcoming court date, and conditions to abide by the injunction order.
A group of protesters remained in the area throughout the night and blocked Highway 16. Late in the evening, before midnight, police officers noted that four patrol cars parked across from the highway had their tires slashed. The RCMP are investigating the criminal action.
Around 3:30 a.m. after the arrested protestors were released the Highway 16 blockade ended and the highway was re-opened. The RCMP would like to remind the public that attempts to block the rail tracks is dangerous and unlawful. As well as a reminder that many people’s lives including, train operators, protesters, police and rail employees are put in danger due to blockades of this nature.
