British Columbians are being targeted by fraudsters who are looking to profit from the fear over the Covid-19 pandemic.
The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre is reporting that these scammers are setting up website’s to sell bogus products, using fake emails, texts and social media posts to try to take money and get personal information. The emails and posts may be promoting awareness and prevention tips, and fake information about cases in your neighbourhood. They also may be asking you to donate to victims, offering advice on unproven treatments, offering protective gear or detection kits, or fake home sanitizing services.
There are currently no drugs or vaccines approved to treat or prevent Covid-19. Whenever a drug or vaccine is approved to treat Covid-19 it will be communicated by legitimate government and health authorities. The easiest way to protect yourself from these kinds of scams is by going to verified sources like the WHO or the CDC.
