Mary Ellen Turpel-Lafond spoke today regarding the investigation into claims that a racist gambling game was happening in a B.C. hospital. The game involved health-care staff betting on the blood alcohol level of Indigenous patients.
Turpel-Lafond says that this investigation is not trying to determine whether racism exists, as it does exist, but to gauge the range and extent of the racism.
Turpel-Lafond says that the investigation has already received many emails and phone calls of people sharing stories. She goes on to say that this is an independent of government there will be no retaliation of any kind.
As of today a website and a survey will be launched, Indigenous people are asked to complete it. The survey will explore the extent of the racism in the health-care system. Turpel-Lafond says that she respects that not all people will want to share their stories. She does encourage all to complete the survey as everyone’s voices need to be heard.
