The Nisga’a government has put a pair of closures into effect for salmon fishing.
The government has been tracking Chinook and Sockeye. As of July 7, 31,785 Sockeye have passed the fish wheels with 35 per cent of the run in, while upriver, an estimated 3,131 Chinook has passed with 74 per cent of the run in.
The annual escapement targets are 200,000 for Sockeye and 13,000 for Chinook. Without proper management too few fish will reach the spawning grounds. With this in mind as of July 9 all fishing for Chinook Salmon is closed for the season. A temporary closure lasting a week has been placed on Sockeye as of July 12. Fishing Sockeye will open again on July 20 for a trial period.
