The Forest Enhancement Society of B.C. grants will be supporting the Williams Lake First Nation.
The support will, create jobs, fight climate change and reduce wildfire risk in the community. Grants to date have removed 64,000 cubic metres of forest fire debris, that total will reach 200,000 over the next two years.
The ongoing project is also estimated to create 26 jobs for the Williams Lake First Nation and Tsideldel First Nation, which have partnered to grind down the debris and ship it to local markets.
Doug Donaldson, Minister of Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development commented that, “This green-energy project is reducing greenhouse gas emissions and building new economic opportunities for both communities while contributing to B.C.’s clean energy plan.”
The Forest Enhancement grants between 2017 and 2019 totalled more than $3 million allowing for the Williams Lake First Nation to build partnerships and develop a plan for grinding the debris and shipping it off to market.
