Three separate landslides closed down Work Channel Rd. from Highway 16 and trapped people on the other side.
On Saturday Aug. 15, late in the morning, Prince Rupert RCMP responded to a call of a landslide at the 9 km mark of Work Channel Rd. Police responded to the call and when they arrived they determined a group of people were trapped on the other side of the slide. RCMP in collaboration with Terrace and Prince Rupert Search and Rescue located and assisted the group of people attempting to hike over the slide, they safely escorted them across with a combined effort between the Search and Rescue team and their helicopter.
A field assessment has been completed by the Ministry of Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development, there’s no anticipated timeline for when the road will reopen. The entrance to Work Channel Rd will be closed to the public until further notice. The Prince Rupert RCMP would like to thank all parties for their assistance in this event.
Hi,
This post makes it seem like everyone has been evacuated. I know for a fact not everyone has. There are campers at the end of work channel that are still there. They were left for now as they have supplies in hopes that the roads would be cleared. The roads need to be cleared before these people run out of supplies.
