In a letter to Air Canada CEO Calvin Rovinescu, Skeena-Bulkley Valley MP Taylor Bachrach is urging them to resume scheduled flights to the Smithers Regional Airport (YYD) as soon as possible.
Bachrach outlines several concerns he has hearing from residents and stakeholders in the local area over the past few months. Air Canada suspended flights from the airport on Apr. 1 in response to the Covid-19 pandemic. Flights were supposed to resume July 1 but were constantly pushed back citing a lack of demand. The current date of resumption is Oct. 1.
Bachrach wrote in the letter, “The lack of scheduled flights severely hampers the COVID-19 economic recovery — not only in Smithers, but in all neighbouring communities that the airport services.”
The letter was written following a meeting he attended on Sept. 7, which gathered representatives from the Town of the Smithers, Village of Telkwa, Regional District of Bulkley-Nechako, MLA Doug Donaldson’s office, Smithers and District Chamber of Commerce, and the
local business community to discuss the issue.
