A teacher at a Nisga’a elementary school has received a Prime Ministers award.
Dianna Rai, a Kindergarten to grade 7 teacher at Alvin A. McKay Elementary School is the recipient of the award. The Nisga’a language is in danger of extinction; roughly 5,500 people speak it, and only 470 of those are fluent. Dianna Rai is passionate about Nisga’a culture, both inside and outside the classroom.
Within the community, she organizes and cooks for feasts, dances at events, helps make traditional medicines and volunteers with the Elders’ Council and the Language Authority. Some of Rai’s outstanding achievements include, being a Nisga’a Language Leader, engaging with the community and buildings bridges for elders by recording and sharing their knowledge.
