A Federal Gas Tax Fund is helping the City of Prince Rupert fund two projects.
Through the fund the City has a new boiler for the Recreation Complex and a new landfill leachate lagoon. The City received over $500,000 towards these two projects which were part of planned capital improvements in the 2020 budget.
The City’s existing landfill is nearing full capacity, the West Berm is taking waste while a new cell is built. Work on a leachate lagoon also began in 2020. Leachate is liquid produced from waste and it’s collected and settles in the pond, then it is treated before it is discharged.
The new boiler at the Recreation Complex is a significant upgrade to the efficiency of the building. The Department anticipates an overall increase to efficiency of boiler operations by 18 and 25 per cent for the facility.
