Today is a big day for Inuk people across Canada, because as of 12:01 this morning, the first all Inuit Inuktitut television channel launched, which is available to anyone with a Shaw Direct subscription.
UVAGUT TV was decades in the making, and will feature four hours a day of children’s programming, live political and cultural events, as well as movies and TV by Inuk creators. On our show this evening is one of the major players behind UVAGUT TV, Dr. Zacharias Kunuk, a filmmaker who’s been involved in pushing Inuit entertainment forward for years.
In our interview he’ll talk about the long journey leading up to this momentous day, and discuss the struggles he faced over the years in trying to create work in his own language.
