The City of Terrace is lowering its flags in remembrance of former Alderman and Mayor Gordon E. Rowland.
Rowland passed away on February 13 in Vernon. He was born and raised in Burns Lake before moving to Terrace in 1958. Rowland was elected to Council as an Alderman in 1971 and served until 1973 when he resigned to run for Mayor. He served as Mayor from 1974 to 1977 when he left Terrace to move to Vernon.
During his time on Council he made a motion that the Upper Little Park be the site of the Terrace arena. The location of the arena had been a long topic of discussion and choosing a location allowed the community to move forward with its plans.
Rowland also was Chairman of the Public Works Committee, sat on the Regional District Board and the Regional Hospital Board, as well as being Vice President of the North Central Municipal Association.
Council will also be recognizing Rowland tonight for his contributions during the regular Council meeting.
