Skeena-Bulkley Valley MP Taylor Bachrach has questioned the Transport Minister, Omar Alghabra on rail safety during Parliamentary hearings. Bachrach has asked for a regional risk assessment in Northwest B.C.
The Minister has not committed to a review of safety in the Northwest. The hearings came following concerns raised by both the Auditor General and Environment Commissioner regarding the federal government’s regulation of rail safety.
The Auditor General’s recent audit of Transport Canada’s rail safety regulations have concluded that eight years after a previous audit, safety recommendations had still not been fully addressed. The recent audit also found the department’s self-regulation approach was inadequate due to the department not confirming whether rail companies Safety Management Systems actually improved safety.
