Streaming at this year’s Real 2 Real International Film Festival for Youth, April 13th to the 24th, K’i Tah Amongst the Birch, is the debut short documentary film from Melaw Nakehk’o.
Melaw is an actress, activist and traditional land-based artist, and this 10-minute piece documents her family as they spend weeks at a remote camp in the Northwest Territories.
The timeframe puts them in the spring of 2020, just as the world shut down due to the spreading covid 19 pandemic.
It was that, that allowed them the freedom they usually don’t have to get back out onto the land together as a family.
In our interview with Melaw, she’ll tell us not only about her first film, but also a bit about being cast in 2015’s the Revenant, the best picture in the Drama category at the 73rd annual Academy Awards.
