An early morning fire on Easter Sunday has closed one of the two Tim Hortons restaurants in Terrace.
The fire broke out shortly before 4 a.m., and restaurant manager, Janine Kraft, said employees initially saw smoke and thought it was an appliance fire. The employees thought they had put the fire out with extinguishers, but soon saw flames, and the restaurant began to fill with smoke. That’s when they evacuated the restaurant and called the fire department.
Kraft said there’s no word on when the restaurant will re-open as the interior suffered extensive damage.
Fortunately, there were no injuries during the fire. Kraft said the economic impact of the fire on employees will be massive. While efforts are being made to transfer some workers to the downtown Terrace Tim Hortons location, not all will be able to get shifts.
She said she has seen negative comments online poking fun at the restaurant in the aftermath of the fire. Kraft said she hopes there’ll be more positivity than negativity, as closing the restaurant is having a devastating impact on employees.
Kraft said at this point it’s believed to be an electrical fire, but an investigation is underway.
