Conservative party leader, Erin O’Toole, participated in a virtual town hall, held by the Terrace and District Chamber of Commerce this afternoon.
With a potential for a spring election, the Tory leader opened with remarks targeting Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and the Liberal Party. O’Toole said if he were to form the next government, it would be principled, ethical, and transparent; in contrast to the current government. In a jab again Trudeau, he spoke about rising through the ranks in his political career, and not inheriting his position.
O’Toole spoke at length that the Tories is the only federal party that supports resource projects in Canada. When asked about reconciliation and the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, he said he supports reconciliation, but has an issue with UNDRIP. He said Canada already has legal measures in place to ensure meaningful Indigenous consultation, but is concerned that implementing UNDRIP would mean giving a broad veto.
He said one of the biggest barriers to reconciliation is opposition to developing resource projects by the Liberals and the NDP.
O’Toole adds he hopes to resolve the veto issue of UNDRIP, and make progress on reconciliation, without limiting economic development.
