With the upcoming HotDocs Film Festival kicking of April 29th, 2021, we’re talking with documentary filmmaker Courtney Montour, who’s here to tell us about her new short film about Indigenous women’s rights activist, Mary Two-Axe Earley, called “Mary Two-Axe Earley: I am Indian again”.
Mary, a Mohawk woman from Kahnawá:ke, married a non-indigenous man and was stripped of her First Nations status under the Indian Act…it was that, which spurred her determination to be a leader in the fight to change the racist and sexist laws which disenfranchised her and many other families in the first place.
In this interview, Courtney will not only talk about the path she took to becoming a filmmaker, but also why she felt so compelled to share the story of Mary Two-Axe Earley, a legend who grew up in the same town as her, just a couple of blocks away.
