NDP MLA Nathan Cullen says 69 new, affordable rental homes are coming to the Stikine region for people with low to moderate incomes.
Cullen adds these new housing projects will provide a safe and affordable place to call home for both Indigenous and Non-Indigenous people in the North.
Three housing projects are slated for the Stikine:
- 15 homes for Elders in the Gitanyow Nation,
- Smithers is expecting 23 homes for Indigenous families and Elders,
- Hazelton will get 31 homes for families, seniors and people with disabilities
These homes are targeted to be available to different tiers of income and are mostly destined for those with very low incomes (including those on income or disability assistance).
The Community Housing Fund is part of the BC NDP government’s 10-year $7-billion housing plan. Three and a half years in, more than 8,600 of these homes are already open, under construction or in development.
