Gitxsan Nation Demand Reconciliatory Action Now.
Gitxsan Hereditary Chiefs, Former Big Brother star Kiefer Collison & Indigenous Advocate Jessica McCallum-Miller among delegates to honor all Indigenous lives lost and challenge the country to do better by acting now.
June 10, 2021 —- On June 17th, 2021 at the Upper Skeena Recreation Centre in Hazelton, the Gitxsan will host a Nation Declaration Event Demanding Reconciliatory Action which will focus on action being taken on all Indigenous issues. The event is open to the Gitxsan community, media, municipal leaders, provincial civil servants and federal politicians and all others and will take place from 1-4pm.
“There are many events taking place honoring the 215 children that were discovered in the Kamloops residential school. It’s opened up many emotions for many people in our community who have tried to bury those horrific memories and now are having to relive the trauma like it was yesterday. Our people are healing all over again and it’s revolting to think that it took the bodies of 215 children to create the level of awareness on truth and reconciliation in this country,” says Hereditary Chief, Bill Blackwater Jr.
“Today’s declaration is asserting our rights and demanding that non indigenous people, all levels of government and industry do better on Indigenous reconciliation. This is an action plan that we demand get implemented starting today, not tomorrow” says event Chairperson Stu Barnes.
The Gitxsan Nation will gather and will honor the 215 lives of the children who did not return home and everyone who was impacted by the trauma of residential schools. Speakers will include Hereditary Chiefs, Gitxsan community members as well as Indigenous Advocate Jessica McCallum-Miller and former Big Brother Canada star Kiefer Collison who both have ties to the Gitxsan community.
The 3 hour event will include speeches from invited guests and delegates and opportunity will be opened up for event attendees to speak on reconciliatory action.
Limited capacity available and COVID protocols will be in effect. Event will be livestreamed on CFNR and if you miss the live event it will be shared on Gitxsan Huwilp Government’s page https://www.facebook.com/gitxsanhuwilpgov
