New Hazelton RCMP are in the midst of investigating what was deemed to be a suspicious fire at an abandoned Gitwangak church that took place on Saturday.
According to a media release from the RCMP, police attended the scene on Church Road on Gitwangak land at around 1:15 a.m. after receiving a call that there was a fire in the entrance of St. Paul’s Anglican Church, which is no longer used by the community.
The Church only sustained minimal damage and is still intact. There was also no report of anyone being injured.
This fire comes in the wake of two churches burning to the ground on reserve land in the Similkameen Valley early Saturday morning, and two others were reduced to rubble and ash on both Penticton and Osoyoos Indian Band land June 21st.
