As of earlier today at noon, Campfires are once again allowed in both the Prince George and Northwest Fire Centres, considering the recent rainy days and cooler temperatures.
The BC Wildfire Service gave a statement saying that although fire danger ratings are in decline throughout the region, the public is still being strongly encouraged to be cautious with any kind of campfire use.
A campfire is currently defined as any fire that is smaller than 0.5 metres high by 0.5 metres wide.
Other activities that were also banned but are now allowed again include using tiki torches or similar kinds of torches, chimneys, outdoor stoves and other portable campfire devices that either don’t have a Canadian Standards Association or Underwriter Laboratories of Canada rating.
However, Category 2 and Category 3 open fires, including fireworks, sky lanterns, burn barrels and burn cages are still banned until Oct. 15 or until the order has been lifted.
The phone number to call if you spot a wildfire or an open burning violation, is *5555 on a cell phone or 1-800-663-5555 toll-free.
