Because of the on-going strike between Unifor Local 2301 and Rio Tinto, a Norwegian cargo ship has been stuck at a dock since July and now the ship’s captain is calling for both the Union and Rio Tinto to give them permission to re-fuel the ship.
The ship, known as MV Indiana, docked at Rio Tinto’s Wharf B in Kitimat back on July 17th so they could load the ship up with aluminum, but now the ship is at the point where if they don’t re-fuel by the end of August, they will run out of Emission Control Area compliant low sulphur marine fuel.
Arbutus Point Marine, who is the sole provider of that type of gas to foreign ships in Canada, has stated that their contractor, Northwest Fuels, is refusing to cross any picket line because they are afraid of being criticized on Social Media.
