The City of Terrace is going to be receiving a grant of $161,100 from both the Provincial and Federal governments in order to try and help solve issues like homelessness and crime in the downtown area.
$27,900 of the grant money is going to be spent creating a pair of temporary toilets at the site previously known as the Terrace Co-op shopping centre. These toilets installations are a response to complaints about defecation and urination in public spaces around the downtown area.
A portable toilet is already available in the Kermode Friendship Centre and the city adding on to the accessible portable toilets downtown would continue to help the issue.
In previous years, grants would also make it possible to install a portable toilet along the fence of the Coop property that is parallel to the train tracks in town.
The two new toilets being installed are apparently only a temporary measure until the city can determine if two more grant applications that add up to $250,000 will be enough to fund a hopefully more permanent outdoor washroom known as a Portland Loo.
