It’s back to the bargaining table for Rio Tinto and Unifor 2301.
Representatives from both sides met in Vancouver this past Monday, and yesterday they released a joint statement.
In the talks, both sides started off stating what they saw as the vision for the future of the Kitimat smelter. Both agreed cultural changes based on mutual trust are paramount to building an environment where the workforce feels the company is listening to them and fully understands their contribution to the well-being of the Kitimat plant.
The statement went on to say everyone should feel involved and be able to resolve issues as quickly as possible. The formalization of grievances should be excepted.
Talks resumed this past Tuesday. If successful, plans will then be drafted for a return to work that will guide what needs to be done from the time an agreement is reached until production is fully reached where all of the pots are in operation.
The statement notes all involved are committed to negotiating in good faith with both sides gaining a better understanding of each other.
The statement concluded with Rio Tinto and Unifor agreeing to hold the families of the workers and the community of Kitimat in the front of their minds as they work to settle the dispute.
