The new Mills Memorial Hospital that is still under construction in Terrace, could potentially be getting the ability to perform a type of procedure that was not available to residents before in the form of elective orthopedic surgery.
This surgery, which is typically used to replace joints, is currently only offered at the hospitals in Kitimat and Prince Rupert for the Northwest region. But with the new Mills Memorial hospital being designated to offer care for Level III trauma in the Northwest, the possibility for this procedure to become part of the hospital’s options exists.
Five beds were initially assigned for orthopedics by Health care planners while they were creating a plan to increase the amount of hospital beds from 44 to 78 in the new hospital.
The decision for the hospital to gain Level III trauma status and allow for surgery options like orthopedic services in Terrace originates with a business plan that was made back in 2018.
