The City of Terrace is going to be inspecting recycling bins before collection this week in order to try and reduce contamination levels within the city’s recycling Program.
City employees in pickup trucks are going to be looking over the recyclable objects before the giant collection trucks arrive to empty the carts.
Any cart that is found to have any kind of contamination will be left with both a bag and a sticker that indicates that the cart is contaminated.
And as a result, any cart that has this combination of a bag and sticker will not have its contents collected.
This move is the city responding to an audit that was sent out back in July from Recycle BC, a company that both takes and sorts local materials. The audit in question revealed that the items that the company was picking up had a 13.5 percent contamination rate, which was way above the maximum rate allowed of 3 percent.
And if the City of Terrace continues to fail to meet the contamination target, they could receive a fine of $2,500 per load, which could end up maxing out at $60,000 per year.
