A pair of abandoned ships broke free from their moorings in Port Edward on Wednesday night, which has now made it so that the pier, gangway and the dock close to the public boat launch in Porpoise Harbour can’t be used by people, along with adding some environmental concerns.
The vessels are also going to be an estimated $2 million to remove.
According to a media statement from the Port Edward Municipality, the Boats, one of which is a 90-foot barge called the Scotch Cap, and the other a 150-foot boat called Fair Wind, were both stuck without authorization on the Prince Rupert Port-owned property for almost 15 years.
Port Edward’s mayor went on to state that both ships were mainly used as fishing vessels when they were active, and even though they were mostly drained of oils and fuel a few years ago, they both still had their share of heavy oil, equipment such as drums with unknown chemicals, and pressurized tanks of oxygen.
The communications manager for the Prince Rupert Port Authority, Monika Cote, gave a statement of her own, letting people know that the authority has responded to the incident.
