A new law proposed in the US has the Canadian cruise ship industry concerned for the future.
Introduced by an Alaskan Representative this summer, the law would eliminate the need for cruise ships to make international stops.
This means cruise ships would be able to travel directly from the US Mainland to Alaska, without stopping in BC.
Instead, ships would stop at local Indigenous ports, noting them as a foreign stop.
Transportation Minister Rob Fleming is concerned over what this means for port cities such as Prince Rupert, in which the cruise ship industry is a significant employer.
Canadian ports had closed due to Covid, forcing temporary legislation allowing US ships to bypass BC ports.
The Canadian Tourism Industry as a whole has lost 16.4 billion dollars during the pandemic.
