Retaining healthcare staff has been an issue in the Northeast since long before Covid.
But, according to Health Minister Adrian Dix, the region’s abysmal vaccination rates are only exacerbating the problem.
Dix says that these low rates are placing added pressure on already strained staff in the region.
Later on, the Health Minister did acknowledge the issues go beyond Covid-19, and announced funding and programs to help.
In addition to the 6.4 million dollar investment in the region, Dix says they will begin transferring patients from the North to other Health Regions.
This will necessitate the adding of 15 ICU beds in the South and Islands dedicated to Northern Health transfers.
Dix closed by saying that, during the pandemic, each region has had problem moments, and this is about BC coming together to help each other.
