The City of Vancouver has officially confirmed that they will be observing the first ever National day for Truth and Reconciliation that will take place next Thursday.
The City sent out a statement saying that all their civic facilities are going to be closed come September 30th so that the facilities’ employees, along with all the city’s other residents, can reflect on the damage residential schools caused through multiple generations of indigenous people and so they can consider the ways that they can advance reconciliation in their respective community.
The initial idea of the creation of this holiday came after the discovery of 215 unmarked graves at the former Kamloops Indian Residential School in May, along with other similar discoveries at other residential schools across Canada. The Federal Government then decided to officially implement the holiday to honor the survivors and victims of the schools.
