An expert has said that the city of Prince George has enabled some new restrictions intending to get rid of all the homeless living in the city’s core, causing more problems for people that are already dealing with massive issues like the pandemic and the overdose crisis.
These new Prince George bylaws have made it illegal to solicit within 10 meters of businesses like liquor stores, day-cares, restaurants and even vehicles stopped in traffic. Another thing that these bylaws have prohibited is open air burning in a park or a street.
Indigenous people and other people of color are typically associated with higher rates of homelessness.
The regional chief of the British Columbia Assembly of First Nations, Terry Teegee, has sent out a statement saying that the homeless population in Prince George is made up of 80 percent Indigenous people and that these bylaws are punishing those who problems with addictions or Mental Health.
