Vanity may soon play a bigger role in crime than on might think.
Today, Terrace City Council received an update on the pre-implementation phase of the RCMP’s Body Worn Camera program.
During the meeting, RCMP informed councilors that the 18-month program is expected to begin its roll-out this Fall.
The implementation of the cameras will start with front-line workers, and is intended to increase fairness and transparency.
Members of the public can ask officers to turn off the camera, but the decision to do so still lies with the officer, and will depend on the individual case.
RCMP will keep footage for a minimum of 2 years, or as long as it is pertinent to the case.
Civilians will be able to view footage of themselves as well by filing an Access to Information Request.
Filling said request can take up to 30 days.
While RCMP have not yet found a vendor to give exact costs, they estimate the cost will be between 2 and 3 thousand dollars per camera annually.
