BC’s coastline is set to become a bit cleaner, thanks in no small part to the Prince Rupert Rainmakers Interact Club.
Volunteers from the Club worked tirelessly to gather donations and support to bring a set of oceanic trash collection devices to the City.
Those devices, known as Seabins, are capable of collecting as much as 1.5 kilograms of ocean waste, including microplastics, per day.
Six of the electric pump-powered bins have been installed at four marinas between Prince Rupert and Port Edward.
In total, the Rainmakers raised 62 thousand dollars in funds from community members.
The Prince Rupert Port Authority also contributed 27,500 dollars from their Community Investment Fund.
According to the Authority, the Interact Club’s efforts to bring the bins to the area will have both local and global impacts.
