Municipal funding is on the way to help the inhabitants of a homeless encampment in Smithers keep their property safe.
Town Council has approved 10 thousand dollars of UBCM grant money to go towards 8 bear-proof steel storage containers for the Veterans Peace Park site.
That money comes from the Town’s 206 thousand dollar Smithers Homeless Outreach and Capacity Building Partnership with the Dze L K’ant Friendship Centre, and Bulkley Valley Social Planning Society.
Camp members will receive a padlock from Dze L K’ant upon applying to use the lockers.
In addition, the town is organizing a clean up of the park prior to Remembrance Day.
Council says a more permanent solution to the issue is needed, but for now the camp provides the best way to keep its inhabitants safe and warm.
