Dozens of students and parents gathered in front of Mount Elizabeth Secondary School this afternoon to peacefully protest the discriminatory actions of a teacher.
Yesterday was picture day at the Kitimat-based school, and one young Haisla student decided to wear his cultural regalia and cedar hat.
Upon seeing this, a teacher began to repeatedly bring it up to the student, referring to his regalia as a costume.
This morning, First Nations students from the school banded together in a show of support for their fellow classmate.
For this, they were given an ultimatum by the same teacher: disperse or leave.
The students chose to walk out in solidarity with their fellow classmate.
Later, parents and students gathered after the school day wrapped up to peacefully protest the racism from the teacher.
Relatives of the student have spoken with the superintendent, principal, Haisla education manager and more.
They were assured that action is being taken, though due to the private nature of the union and the matter, they are unable to discuss the process as of yet.
