Discriminatory comments allegedly made by a teacher at Mount Elizabeth Secondary School have led to a student walk out, and peaceful gathering later today.
Yesterday was picture day at the Kitimat based high school, and a young Haisla student had decided to wear traditional regalia.
According to witnesses, a teacher proceeded to mock the student for this decision, which stretched in to this morning when the student was asked to leave the classroom.
In a show of solidarity, his classmates decided to also stand and leave the classroom on his behalf.
Now, students and parents are planning to show their own support by gathering in the school’s staff parking lot at 3:00 this afternoon.
Organizers are asking everyone who attends to remain peaceful and respectful as they denounce the discrimination.
Relatives say they have spoken with the superintendent, principal, vice principal, and Haisla education manager regarding the situation.
They say that, while they can’t share specifics due to privacy, they are dealing with the situation.
