Recently discovered damage at the City of Terrace’s Sewage Treatment Plant could cost hundreds of thousands of dollars to repair.
Damage sustained by the plant’s outfall pipe during this year’s flooding has left the bare pipe exposed to the river, and could ultimately lead to a rupture.
When installed 22 years ago, the polyethylene pipe was weighed down by concrete ballasts, covered in a cement blanket, and buried between thick layers of excavated river rock.
At the moment, staff is unsure as to the total cost or process involved in repairing the flood-damaged protective layers.
The City of Terrace has agreed to put forward 40 thousand dollars in funding to hire a consultant to begin initial design plans to repair the damage.
In addition, the consultation will help staff prepare an application for Emergency Management BC funding, which they hope will cover the majority of actual repair costs.
However, should they not be able to acquire grant funding, the repairs will still be necessary and could cost the City hundreds of thousands.
