Last month, the US approved a Covid vaccine for children aged 5-11, and Canada isn’t far behind.
Provincial Health Officer Doctor Bonnie Henry expects Health Canada’s review of the youth version of the vaccine to be complete soon.
A separate review by the National Advisory Committee on Immunization will be released at the same time as the Health Canada report.
According to Doctor Henry, the version of the vaccine being proposed for children is tailored to meet their specific needs.
Featuring a lower dosage of around 10 mg, the vaccine accounts for the generally stronger immune systems of children, and limits side effects and pain or discomfort involved in getting the shot.
Parents can register their children with the Ministry to get notified once the vaccine is approved and they become eligible.
The Ministry expects to be able to vaccinate all 300 thousand eligible children in BC before the new year, if approval comes soon.
Vaccines in children 5-11 will not be made mandatory as of yet.
