An injection of RCMP officers could be coming to fill vacanies in the North as Surrey transitions to their own police force.
Surrey, which is currently home to the largest RCMP detachment in Canada, are in the process of training their own municipal force.
Once training is complete, some 800 officers will need to be transfered, and with many northern communities lacking full staff, the North serves as a prime destination.
A transition period in Surrey will launch this month, and a gradual, phased, approach to reassigning the officers.
RCMP say the transfer process will be similar to the current one, where officers apply to fill vacancies as they become available.
Community members in Granisle, Iskut, and other remote communities have made pleas for more officers in recent days.
