In a statement issued this morning, the Elected Chief and Council of the Wet’suwet’en, condemned the on-going Wedzin Kwa blockades, and their eviction efforts.
This weekend, Gidimt’en land defenders at the Coyote Camp issued a notice of eviction to Coastal GasLink workers on their territory.
Following the notice, members set up two new blockades along the route, in an effort to prevent drilling under the river.
Today, the Nation’s Elected Chief, Maureen Luggi, and Council issued a letter saying they do not support the blockades, and calling them dangerous.
In the letter they called the timing of the blockades to be disrespectful to elders who have passed away during the pandemic, as well as those impacted by the recent extreme weather.
They want to make it clear that the blockaders only represent a small portion of their people, and that the Elected Council is still behind the project.
